Let’s get creative and make a Sharpie Mug!

I researched which markers work best for mugs and I read it’s important to use the oil-based Sharpie markers. Some say the regular sharpie markers do work, but for this DIY project, I wanted to try out the oil-based Sharpie markers. I checked Craftaholics Anonymous for the different tips.

This is a fun and easy project to do. I made the mugs for my co-workers as a gift and I wanted to personalize them with things that they like.

Here is the list of materials you’ll need:

  1. Wash your mug to get rid of any dust and oils on it and make sure it’s dry.
  2. Start sketching on your mug by freehanding with your pencil. It was a little hard for me to draw on the mug because of the gloss and the curves of the mug, but feel free to just jump right in with the Sharpie marker instead of using the pencil.
  3. Once you’re all finished sketching, whip out your oil-based Sharpie marker and start outlining the lines you sketched. If you make a mistake, you can grab a Q-tip and dip it in some rubbing alcohol to fix it.
  4. I didn’t bake the mug right away. I waited almost 24 hours to let the markers set.
  5. Put your mug in the oven and preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  6. When it’s done preheating, set the timer for 30 minutes.
  7. Once it’s finished, let it cool in the oven before removing it.

And voila! These are the finished mugs. I think they turned out nicely, so nice that I almost wanted to keep them all to myself!

What I thought took the most time was free-handing the writing and finding out different typography styles, but it was all worth it in the end.

Comment below which mug was your favorite and which DIY Sharpie mug method worked best for you! I’d love to know.
